The UC Davis Washington Program offers a transformational opportunity to live, learn, and intern in the heart of the nation’s capital. Housed within the UC Washington Center (UCDC), an 11-story facility located just blocks from the White House, the program allows undergraduates to accelerate their careers while earning academic credit. Participants immerse themselves in the vibrant energy of D.C., gaining access to world-renowned institutions, cultural landmarks, and a professional network that spans the globe.

Program of Study

UCDC is open to undergraduates from all majors with second, third, or fourth year standing. Applicants must be in good academic standing and demonstrate a history of engagement through previous work, volunteer, or leadership experience.

Academic Quarter Option (Fall, Winter, Spring)

Students remain fully registered UC Davis students and earn 12 upper-division units during their quarter in residence.

  • Mandatory Internship (WAS 192; 8 units). Students intern 3 to 4 days per week (24 to 32 hours) at prestigious organizations including federal agencies, Congress, museums, think tanks, or international NGOs. Course is graded Pass/No Pass.
  • Mandatory Core Seminar (WAS 193; 4 units). Students enroll in a high-impact, discussion-based seminar designed to frame their internship experience within a scholastic context. These courses, often featuring guest speakers and site visits, are equivalent to POL 193W and are for a Letter Grade Only.
  • Optional Second Seminar (4 units). Students may choose to enroll in an additional upper division seminar offered at the UCDC Center to further their academic progress.

Financial aid eligibility is maintained, with aid packages automatically adjusted to reflect the D.C. cost of living.

Summer Program Options

The 10-week summer session offers a flexible Internship Only experience with two tracks. Both require a commitment of 32 to 40 hours of interning per week.

  • Credit Option. Students earn 4 or 8 units directly through the UCDC Center via an agreement with UCLA. This track includes dedicated on-site internship advising and is eligible for financial aid if enrolled in at least 6 units.
  • Non-Credit Option. An excellent way to gain professional experience without tuition fees. This track is not eligible for financial aid or on-site UCDC internship advising.

University Graduation & Residency

With careful planning, UCDC fits seamlessly into any graduation plan, including for graduating seniors.

  • Residency Exceptions. The faculty have approved two specific exceptions to the University residence requirement, allowing students to complete their final degree requirements while in Washington, D.C., or immediately upon return to Davis.
  • Unit Caps. Students may participate during their senior year provided they have not exceeded 225 units prior to departure.
  • GE & Major Credit. Many UCDC courses can satisfy General Education (GE) or major/minor requirements. Students are encouraged to consult their major advisor and college Dean's Office early in the planning process.
