Graduate Study

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Medical Device Development is a cutting-edge program that promises to accelerate the career development of aspiring engineers in all disciplines who wish to pivot into the exciting field of medical devices.

This intensive and focused nine-month graduate program provides students a carefully crafted curriculum and hands-on opportunities to develop new skills in medical product development, business and leadership, device fabrication and the engineering design process. Students will have direct access to state-of-the-art technology at the TEAM Lab at Aggie Square, UC Davis’ Sacramento-based innovation hub, and interact with experts at the Graduate School of Management, School of Medicine and throughout the health sciences community. 

Preparation

No restrictions exist on the major, but applicants are expected to possess aptitude and interest in engineering and careers in medical device development. The most competitive applicants will have an undergraduate degree in engineering or closely related STEM field. Applicants are expected to have satisfactorily completed (minimum of grade C or equivalent) the equivalent of the following UC Davis courses: 1 year (3 quarters or 2 semesters) of Physics (UC Davis Equivalent PHY 009APHY 009B, and PHY 009C), Mathematics through differential Calculus (UCD Equivalent MAT 022B), Minimum of two advanced (junior or senior-level) engineering topics; e.g., mechanics, thermodynamics, transport phenomena. Course work deficiencies (e.g. missing prerequisites) should be completed by taking equivalent courses or equivalent online certification courses by the end of the first quarter by earning a letter grade of “B” or better.

Medical Device Development (MDD)

MDD 412 — Business Leadership for Engineers II (3 units)

Course Description: Managing innovative enterprise in changing and uncertain environments. Technology forecasting and assessment, program selection and control, financial management, regulation, and ethics. Strategic management of organizations, including analysis of industries, firm resources and capabilities and corporate strategy. Strategy formulation, implementation and strategic decision-making. Firm and industry life cycles and change.

MDD 413 — Business Leadership for Engineers III (3 units)

Course Description: Corporate financial policy and investment management. Capital budgeting and cost-of-capital determination. Valuation principles for investments with long-lived and risky cash-flows. Theory of negotiation; application of theory to process of building teams to achieve business purposes. Integrative and distributive strategies of claiming value, recognizing bargaining tricks, uncovering hidden agendas, and brainstorming to extend Pareto frontier.
